Burundi Airlines provides security, passenger and cargo sales, freight handling, warehousing and full aircraft ground assistance at Bujumbura International Airport.

Security & Safety Service

Security & Safety Service

The Security & Safety Service prevents involuntary accidents and deliberate acts (theft, vandalism, attacks, etc.). It oversees strict implementation of ICAO recommendations in accordance with Annex 17 of the Chicago Convention.

Core duties

  • Secure aircraft during ground handling
  • Secure custody and escort of baggage and parcels on departure and arrival
  • Supervise enhanced protection of ramp transport
  • Physically inspect unaccompanied baggage security status
  • Secure preparation and storage premises and the warehouse
  • Secure in-flight catering at the aircraft stand
  • Supervise manual screening of oversized parcels
  • Screen staff and enforce mandatory badges, uniforms and vests
  • Secure passengers at check-in
  • Secure palletisation and depalletisation

Awareness and prevention

  • Raise staff awareness of security and safety standards
  • Combat intoxication (breathalyser testing)
  • Discourage unauthorised portering of passenger baggage for payment
  • Monitor and report any attempt to disrupt company operations

Passenger Sales Service

The Bujumbura Agency Section is headed by a Section Chief responsible for customer reception, reservations and travel document issuance.

Bujumbura Agency Section

  • Welcome and inform customers
  • Supervise seat reservations
  • Calculate travel costs and issue pro forma invoices
  • Issue commercial travel documents
  • Send passenger manifests to ground handling within required deadlines
  • Process refunds for unused or partially used travel documents
  • Process endorsements per applicable rules and each airline's instructions
  • Re-route tickets
  • Reconfirm seats on board aircraft

Cargo Sales Service

Cargo Sales Service

The Freight Service manages and processes air freight, mail and baggage on import and export, including bonded warehousing.

Import Section

  • Receive cargo documents (AWB and manifests) from the freight agent
  • Distribute cargo documents to relevant departments (import counter, OBR, forwarders…)
  • Depalletise and tally parcels on the manifest (tally clerk, airline, OBR)
  • Store parcels in designated warehouse areas
  • First and second verification of manifest tally
  • Enter inbound manifest into the system
  • Invoice services after customs formalities
  • Deliver parcels to customers
  • Morning and evening parcel inventories on business days

Export Section

  • Welcome customers and unload trucks
  • Explain pre-acceptance procedures before Burundi Airlines accepts parcels
  • Accept packaging after formalities (specific packaging, strapping…)
  • Weigh parcels and record dimensions
  • Invoice services and issue AWB and cargo manifest
  • Label, strap, palletise or place on bulk carts
  • Warehouse parcels and tally on exit
  • Handover to Ground Handling for aircraft loading
  • Retain documents for all shipments

Note : Exported parcels must be inspected by authorised authorities (AACB, OBR).

Tallying & verification

A warehouse tally clerk verifies whether parcels arrived in good condition or are open, defective, short or in excess, and records anomalies on the tally manifest.

Tally clerk duties

  • Direct dangerous goods, animals and perishables to appropriate storage aisles
  • Monitor and tally incoming parcel numbers (manifest or label)
  • Record excess parcels on the manifest
  • Send parcels to appropriate aisles by format
  • Store high-value parcels in the secure cage
  • Keep large crates in the outer aisle
  • Co-sign the tally manifest with OBR and airline agents
  • Report anomalies to the appropriate authority

Warehousing

Warehousing

In the storage aisles, aisle supervisors receive, register and physically track each parcel. A warehouse manager performs a second verification.

Aisle supervisor responsibilities

  • Receive parcels
  • Register parcels on warehouse sheets
  • Physically verify each parcel is in its assigned location
  • Record shortages, excess, damage and arrival condition

Warehouse manager control

  • Second verification and physical walk-through of aisles
  • Sign warehouse registration sheets
  • Verify AWB number, manifest, quantity and arrival condition

Customer parcel delivery

The warehouse counter welcomes customers, identifies parcel owners and delivers goods once all formalities are complete.

Delivery process

  • Customer reception and guidance by front-desk agents
  • Verify documents (AWB and manifest entered, invoices, payment method)
  • Confirm customer has completed customs formalities
  • Record outbound parcels in the warehouse exit register
  • Stamp and sign the AWB to authenticate delivery
  • Customer signature in the register for release and collection
  • Loading by Burundi Airlines when the service has been paid

Aircraft ground handling

Aircraft ground handling

Ground Handling provides full aircraft assistance: passenger reception and check-in, cabin cleaning, loading and unloading, and baggage processing. Scheduled and non-scheduled flights are handled, for passengers and cargo.

Passenger and baggage check-in

  • Verify passport and ticket compliance (validity, blacklist, class, routing)
  • Inspect baggage condition and carry-on per airline standards
  • Weigh accompanied baggage and notify airline of excess
  • Mark coupon and boarding pass (number, initials, weight, tags)
  • Return ticket, boarding pass and baggage tag stubs to passenger
  • Prepare passenger manifest

Boarding and documentation

  • Boarding announcements every 15 minutes
  • Priority for special passengers (ill, disabled) and families
  • Assistance for unaccompanied minors
  • Verify boarding pass stubs match manifest before departure
  • Prepare load plan, loadsheet and trimsheet

Arrival, unloading and loading

  • Position chocks, stairs, GPU, ASU, belts and elevating platforms
  • Welcome passengers and direct to arrival or transit lounge
  • Unload per flight plan; forward freight to cargo warehouse
  • Full cabin cleaning (cockpit, lounges, toilets, disinfection)
  • Load freight, mail and baggage per load plan
  • Flight close-out: airline messages, missing baggage, movements

Departure, baggage and fueling

  • Remove ground equipment (stairs, GPU, ASU, chocks) and assist engine start
  • Baggage Section: claims, missing, damaged or excess baggage
  • Call centre to inform passengers on baggage tracing status
  • Fueling Section: HRS station, fuel tracking, into-plane billing, safety standards
